For creatives, finding inspiration for new design ideas is easy.
And because we work with such a flashy medium, glass, we can quickly bring our ideas
to life in glimmering fashion with wonderful results.
But if you’re ready to take your work to the next level, it’s
time to start thinking beyond the focal point and consider your background
space.
Instead of simply dropping your subject on a plain field,
try to think of different patterns or settings that would enrich your subject. Introduce
design elements that augment your subject and guaranteed they’ll make the
overall visual impact of your work much stronger.
These simple strawberry bowls are great examples of how strongly
pattern and shape influence the viewer’s overall impression of the artwork. Here
I’ve experimented with three different backdrops in an effort to heighten the
impact of my subject and focal point, the strawberries. Notice how each
backdrop prompts a slightly different sentiment. As the artist, this small but
powerful control is yours to apply as mildly or as wildly as you like.
There’s no doubt, an interesting background is a powerful visual
tool. With it you can sway the mood of a piece of art. You can create a vibrant
party setting, or a tranquil calming setting, or an intriguing mysterious setting.
These added features draw attention to your work and make it stand out from the
rest.
Adding unique design elements that support your subject matter,
makes your work more interesting. This added effort engages the viewer longer. And
in the end, making a lasting impression is the greatest reward.
Examples of three totally different backgrounds and how
they affect the visual impact of the same subject matter.
