Another Busy Week in the Glass Studio

The Glass Craft and Bead Expo in Las Vegas, NV is only two weeks away! Last week I spent several days collecting classroom supplies and making fusible components for the students to use in the classes I’m teaching at the show.

Even with detailed lists and after months of ordering supplies, I’m amazed how long it takes to prepare for 5 classes. It’s a complicated task to plan, gather and ship everything necessary to run enriching classes outside the convenience and accessibility of my private
glass studio.

While pre-cutting 50 sheets of Papyrus fiber paper to line the inside of the 12 Skutt Firebox 14 kilns we use in class, I calculated a few statistics. The numbers gave me renewed incentive to be well prepared. For me, the most important part of teaching is giving my students the absolute best learning experience possible.

Here are some fun facts that may surprise you.

In 5 days I have the pleasure of sharing my passion for glass fusing with about 80 students. My students go through about 90 square feet of Oceanside Glasstile System 96 glass. They cut up about 20 square feet of Wissmach 96 glass. Students hand-pick flashy accents from a dazzling assortment of CBS dichroic glass. They select frit colors and sizes from more than 40 jars of System 96 frit. We fire Skutt Firebox 14 kilns 48 times. Students in my classes produce more than 190 artistic projects. It’s no wonder that preparing for such ambitious creativity takes organization, time and effort.

Why I do it.

I know it’s not easy to get away. It’s not easy to set aside time or spend money on your artistic passion. I admire my student’s dedication to their art. I appreciate their desire to improve their skills and expand their design style. But most of all, I love my student’s sincere generosity. Their willingness to help each other and openly share their successes as well as mistakes. This is what makes them the fun, friendly, good people I like to hang out with.

Each year the Glass Craft and Bead Expo makes it possible for us to gather and be creative. You can imagine the enthusiasm, high energy and creativity that flourishes when hundreds of passionate artists get together. When happy creatives gather, magic happens.

There’s still room in two of my classes. In my Saturday class, Fire & Ice: Hot Techniques for Cool Projects you’ll learn how to combine complex fusible components to make amazing original art. My Sunday, Fusing Art Design class is by far the absolute best time investment you can make to take your glass from craft to fine art. If you’d like to join me, you can register online here https://www.glasscraftexpo.com/class-list.php .

I look forward to lots of fusing, seeing old friends and making new friends at EXPO in two weeks. I hope to see YOU there!

My Week in the Studio

It’s a busy time in the glass studio. This week I’m sharing my creative process and glass fusing tips through pictures.

My week started with hot flashes.

I got fired up!

I stripped to cool off.

That didn’t help so I went fishing for new ideas.

A mermaid swam by and offered inspiration.

Then new ideas flowed non-stop. All at once, nine projects spilled from my mind and poured out onto my work table. Compositions came is huge waves.

Swamped with design ideas, I planted flowers to relax.

Later, an out of town guest came to visit.

He warmed up to glass fusing right away.

The kiln inspector came by unexpectedly.

I saw her out and went back to work.

When it was time for a break.

A new friend joined me.

It was a great week of creativity.

What exciting discoveries will next week bring? I don’t know, but I’m certain the burning flame of inspiration will light the way.

I hope you enjoyed the behind-the-scenes look at my busy, creative, and fun life in the studio.

Happy fusing!
